    ABSTRACT
In this talk, an overview on the current status and inherent opportunities in Wireless Communications Standardization and Regulation is presented. In particular, Standardization is addressed with a focus on novel technologies such as ETSI Reconfigurable Radio Systems (ETSI RRS) which is working on Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Cognitive Radio (CR), latest IEEE projects including the Gbps WLAN evolution (IEEE 802.11ac/ad) and a standard for WiFi in TV White Spaces (IEEE 802.11af), IEEE SCC41 targeting standards with opportunistic spectrum access beyond TV White Spaces bands, etc. From the regulation side, there is currently a revision of the R&TTE Directive (the basic European regulatory framework for all wireless devices) under way with plans to allow for SDR and CR devices in the future. This new regulatory framework is expected to offer huge potential for flexible radio devices to be brought into the market and the inherent opportunities will be discussed.
